Is your website listed in Chinese search engines? There are millions of Chinese english language speakers and perhaps your business trades or would like to trade with China? Well after a previous post on this blog relating to Google and China, I decided to do some research into search engine submission. Here is how you can get started.

Baidu’s submission url is: http://www.baidu.com/search/url_submit.html

Simple type in your website address and fill in the English language captcha and select the submit button to the right of the captcha window. Even though the text on the next page is red, hopefully your site was successfully submitted. Instead of translating the text (which you could easily using google translate), look at the new url for the word success.

Tianwang’s submission url is: http://home.tianwang.com/denglu.htm but it wasn’t working when I tried. Presenting an mysql error instead.

Sunwukong’s submission url is: http://www.sunwukong.cn/add.php . If you read and then agree to the terms, you are presented with a box to type in your url as well as categories and all in English. Unfortunately the search engine submission said ‘human right , Prohibited Site Content, Site may not include this content. Please modify your site and try again later or click [Guestbook] and contact us.‘ when I tried to submit this blog. However when I submitted another website, it was accepted. The process for verification is extremely fast. They also appear to be presenting Google search results, so unsure if any ramifications submitting here as well as submitting and being listed in Google? So use at your own risk.

As you can imagine, if this blog doesn’t pass the criteria (I have not tried contacting them via guestbook to discuss) for Sunwukong then perhaps it won’t be listed on the previous two either. So perhaps try Sunwukong first to assess.

If you are looking at listing your site in Chinese search engines, please leave comments telling us of your experiences and don’t hesitate to recommend search engines also. Also if you live in China, very interested to read about your views and experiences of search engines worldwide as well as in China.

Google have announced they are no longer willing to censor their results on their Chinese portal google.cn . This comes accompanied with the news that Google have experienced cyber attacks originating from China in an attempt to gain access to human rights activists information via Googles infrastructure. A possibly outcome will be the closure of Google’s Chinese office and / or google.cn portal. This all apparently depends on talks Google will be having with the Chinese government. Google’s blog post and more details can be found here: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/new-approach-to-china.html

Dramatic news indeed and I’m sure we all will be following developments with interest. However this lead me to thinking about this blogs website address exposure in China via search engines. Not being naive as a) this blog has not been submitted to Chinese search engines and Chinese sites (such as .cn domains as well as .com etc). b) It’s an English language blog! However this is what I found…

The blog’s url is directed listed on Google’s Chinese portal, but not Yahoo’s. It also isn’t listed at Zhongsou or Baidu. Effectively meaning over ten million english language speakers (I know this doesn’t necessarily mean readers) in China will have problems discovering the blog if they are not using Google’s Chinese portal. Obviously there are no doubt other search engines that ‘could’ directly list the blog (that I am unaware of currently) or sites that are listed that have a link to the blog. However if Google was to close their Chinese portal, it will impact visability (unsure if Chinese population will be able to then access google.com directly itself, unless via proxy). This also means I’ve neglected along with thousands others a whole Countries ability to discover a site. Obviously if your business happens to trade with China, this is even more relevant.

Don’t know about you, but I think it’s time I did my homework.

Everyone seems to be discussing online privacy, especially related to social networks. From the obvious candidates such as facebook and twitter, to youtube, flickr and others. People especially not used to social networks are highly concerned about the lack of privacy. The gist from recent conversations I’ve had, hasn’t been the obvious ‘sensitive information’ concerns, but shock at what people share and really is there any point to being involved in ‘social networks’, especially their business. Whereas the reality is everyone has been since day one, just different ones.

Your local pub doesn’t warn you what to say, unless you make a nuisance of yourself. Your business breakfast meeting doesn’t have a guideline on how to dress. The conference organisers don’t stop you at the door and give you a five minute walk through of ‘conference etiquette’. I’ve seen nudity in pubs, heard horrendous conversations at breakfast meetings and met people suffering hangovers at conferences, trying to keep their breakfast down whilst representing their organisations. The problem obviously being it’s logged, often search engine friendly and viewable to thousands if online. There will be and are those who regret what they’ve shared (done), same as the ‘offline’ world.

The reality is that younger generations are finding it easier to cope and appear to have less barriers and concerns than those decades older, who have been voicing their concerns to me recently (from 33yrs to 69yrs old). Youtube was only formed in 2005, Flickr 2004 and twitter 2006. These also are young organisations responding to the demand and always adapting to provide new features to increase visitors. Providing new ways to ‘engage’. I hope those who voiced their concerns to me recently, do join soon. Bringing experience and views to the ‘conversation’, enriching it for all.

So what it all boils down to is…. common sense. As people become more familiar with online social networks, many will forget the concerns of the past and just adapt. I believe though we should have better support for the vulnerable online. Which still should be improved offline also!

As for those sharing what their ate for breakfast or what the weather is like. You can choose who to follow, whether to watch and listen and what you devote your time and energy to. You can choose whether to just provide links to your latest blog post, respond to people’s content or explore new ways of providing support etc. Social networks are not one size fit all. Pretty much the same for offline social networks if you ask me.

There are many ways to communicate you’ve updated your blog. Subscribing via email though is often overlooked by smaller blogs. Now ‘serious’ bloggers will suggest solutions like ‘aweber’, which I’ve read good reviews and you should probably research. However i’ve seen popular blogs using feedburner’s subscribe via email service. It all depends on your requirements. Call me naive if you wish, but I quite like Google’s feedburner service.

The setup

Within five minutes of setting up your feedburner account you can have a subscribe via email option up and running on your blog. You configure the options, feedburner gives you the html code. Then if your a wordpress user you paste this via the ‘widgets’ section as html. et voila.

Tips

- You configure the ‘Email Subscriptions’ via feedburner’s ‘publicize’ tab.

- Don’t forget to modify ‘communication preferences’ also found via the ‘publicize’ tab to configure the email address you wish to use. So that during all aspects of the subscription your personal google account email address is not sent out. Instead you could setup a specific address for your blog.

- Recommend setting the ‘delivery’ options. So you get to choose when you want your target audience to receive the emails.

Mini FAQ

Q. Can I view how many subscribers I have?

A. Yes via ‘Publicize’ and then ‘Subscription Management’.

Q. Can I see a list of my subscribers and export this list?

A. Yes you can see a list of all subscribers email addresses and export the list via csv (which can be read in excel for instance). However do not be a fool. People have only signed up to your blog. Don’t abuse their trust in subscribing.

The visitor experience….

Then when someone wishes to subscribe and click the link, they are presented with a captcha window and a box to fill in their email address. Feedburner sends them an email to confirm and they are subscribed. Then every blog post they receive via email, contains an unsubscribe option and mentions the service is powered by google.

So another nifty service offered by google. You can find feedburner here: link . However don’t forget to subscribe to Small Business Tech’s own posts via email.

Google Blog Search has relaunched with a new homepage. So why should you care and indeed use it? Well you can tag surf with wordpress and find blogs via many other avenues. Is this just another way that will get lost in the mix?

No, I believe the answer is. ‘A’ because Google are doing it and ‘B’ because it presents a clean simple method to search across the spectrum of blogs. With cleanly displayed results sortable by date etc, what else would you expect from Google? I especially like the subscribe feature (subscribe to an atom or rss feed of your search!), that I intend to try out. Job well done I think and useful for any business or home user.

So http://blogsearch.google.com/ should be another method for you to find relevant data, not just when you want to find a blog, but when you are doing your searches in general. Couple this with the fantastic Google Alerts and it is a great way of finding content.

Here are two google search tips that I regularly use to help me find better results and in a format I find easy to quickly read.

Why not try speech marks when searching. Example: “Small Business Tech Blog” will search for that exact phrase and give almost 400 results rather than the 128 million results listed without the speech marks.

You could also mix and match…. you can use multiple speech marks. Examples: “Large Hadron Collider” “Blogs” or also add words without speech marks to produce more varied results. “Large Hadron” blogs

I don’t know about you, but I find wiki’s extremely helpful and well laid out. So why not try adding the word wiki to you search terms. I find this very useful for when I am in a rush and need to find details about subjects quickly. I personally find it easy to navigate wiki pages and usually they are very well written.

Example: “Large Hadron Collider” “wiki” as seen in the above screenshot finds useful relevant wiki results about the LHC.

Hope these two tips help you and please don’t hesitate to leave feedback.

Some people see it as an ‘internet fad’ still, some people think it is beneath them, some feel stupid asking a colleague if they use skype. I know skype has saved me thousands in the last five years or so. It is worthy of consideration.

How can Skype help you save money and be more productive with just a broadband connection:

Two users use skype via their P.C.’s and it costs you nothing.

Ideal for conference calls with other skype users via a broadband connection.

More secure than many other services for instant messaging.

Easy to set when your available and see when colleagues are available.

Then you have the nifty features that cost money:

You can assign telephone numbers from different countries and regions to a skype account. You can have more than one number on one skype account.

You can have an answer service.

You can pay for devices to use skype through. E.g. A wireless skype phone for 802.11b networks. Skype on a mobile phone or even a usb phone if you don’t want to use a headset on your laptop or desktop.

They have calling packages also.
